You will experience the heart of Cretan lifestyle with our visits to an oil mill and a winery. You will see how the most characteristic ingredients of Mediterranean Cuisine are produced.
10:00 Ano Vouves
We will make a small stop at Ano Vouves, at the ancient olive tree on our way to Palaiochora. This is the oldest recorded olive tree in the world, proclaimed as a natural monument. Its age is estimated between 3000 and 5000 years and still remains alive. Next to the monumental tree, visitors can learn about the olive cultivation at the Olive Tree Museum of Vouves.
10:30 Oil Mill
Olive trees can be found everywhere at the south of Greece and especially the Cretan olive oil is one of the finest. Visitors will have the opportunity for a guided tour and olive oil tasting at the oil mill. As the olive oil production is during the winter, you will see the process through a small documentary at the oil mill.
11:30 Rotonda and Deliana
Deliana is a small village where you can enjoy the nature with a walk at the Deliana Gorge that starts at the end of the village. It is a small hike of 40 minutes. In the village you can also visit the church of Archangel Michael, one of the finest Byzantine monuments, that dates back from the 6th century. The church is also known as Rotonda as it has circular mastoid dome. Its floor is decorated with mosaics with various animal, plant and geometric representations.
13:00 Winery
With our visit to this winery of Chania you will witness the process of vinification. Here you will enjoy a guided tour around the winery’s facilities with explanation of the wine making procedure. At the end of the tour you will taste different labels from the winery accompanied with cheese bites, Cretan rusks and homemade olives.
